In a crystal clear pond filled with swaying green grass lived a bright orange fish named Finny. Finny was very fast and loved to zoom through the water. He often wondered how he could stay under the water all day long.

Finny watched the frogs hop onto lily pads to take a deep breath of air. He tried to poke his head out of the water too, but it felt very strange. He liked the cool water much better than the dry air above.

He swam down to find his smartest friend, Bubbles the Snail. Bubbles was busy cleaning a smooth purple rock near the bottom. Finny asked him how a fish could breathe when they did not have any big lungs like the frogs.

Bubbles smiled and pointed his wiggly antennae at the sides of Finny's head. He explained that those special flaps were called gills. Gills are like magic filters that pull oxygen right out of the water while Finny swims along.

Finny took a big gulp of water and watched his gills move in and out. It felt like a refreshing drink and a deep breath all at once! He realized that the water was full of invisible air that kept him strong and healthy.

Page 6
Bubbles led Finny to a patch of bright green underwater plants dancing in the current. He showed Finny tiny, sparkling bubbles clinging to the leaves. These plants were busy making fresh air for all the fish in the pond to use.

Finny used his nose to pop one of the tiny bubbles. He felt a tickle of fresh energy as he zoomed around the plants in a big circle. He was so happy to have such wonderful plants as his neighbors in the water.

The two friends spent the afternoon exploring the deepest parts of the pond. They found a hidden cave where the water was very cool. Finny practiced breathing slowly and steadily through his gills while Bubbles rested on his orange back.

Finny realized that his breath was a gift from the water and the plants. He promised to help keep the pond clean so the water would always be fresh. Bubbles clapped his tiny bits of shell together to celebrate Finny's great idea.

And so, Finny the Goldfish never wondered about the frogs again. He knew exactly how his amazing gills worked. Finally, he fell asleep in the soft grass, breathing the magic of the water and dreaming of his next big adventure.
