A curious boy learns how polar bears survive in the cold Arctic by watching a mother bear and her cub through his magical telescope.
Page 1
Leo the Explorer stood on the edge of the snowy Arctic tundra. He adjusted his yellow parka and held his brass telescope tightly. He wanted to see how the great white bears lived in the freezing cold north.
Page 2
Through his lens, Leo spotted a giant white shape moving across the frozen sea. It was Mama Bear, with her thick creamy-white fur and black nose. She looked very warm despite the wind blowing snow all around her.

Right behind her hopped Pippin the Cub. Pippin was a small, fluffy ball of white fur with very round eyes. He was learning how to walk on the slippery ice by following his mother's very large footprints.

Leo noticed that the bears did not shiver at all. He learned that polar bears have thick layers of fat called blubber. This special fat acts like a warm blanket to keep them cozy in the icy water.

Suddenly, Mama Bear jumped into the dark, freezing ocean with a giant splash. She used her wide, fuzzy paws like paddles to swim through the waves. Pippin watched from the edge, waiting for his mother to return.

Pippin felt a bit chilly, so he began to run and slide on his belly. This helped his body stay warm and strong. Leo laughed as he watched the little cub glide across the smooth ice like a fluffy sled.

The sun began to set, turning the sky into shades of pink and orange. Mama Bear climbed out of the water and shook herself dry. Tiny ice crystals flew off her thick fur like sparkling diamonds in the light.
