Leo's Big Drive to Tomorrow
A young boy named Leo learns that being a good driver starts with patience, safety, and practice on his special wooden pedal car.

Leo looked at the big blue car in the driveway and sighed. He wished he could turn the key and zoom away like the grown-ups did. His messy brown hair caught the sunlight as he imagined driving to the moon.

Dad walked over and saw Leo staring at the steering wheel. He knelt down so he was eye-to-eye with his son. Dad explained that driving is a very big job that requires a lot of practice and a focused mind.

Dad led Leo to the garage and pulled a dusty sheet off a small wooden pedal car. It was bright red with shiny silver hubcaps. Leo jumped for joy in his red sneakers because this was his very own vehicle.

Before Leo could climb inside, Dad held up a small orange vest and a shiny helmet. He told Leo that every good driver stays safe. Leo buckled his helmet and felt like a professional racer ready for the track.

Leo sat in the seat and grabbed the steering wheel with both hands. Dad showed him how to look left, then right, and then left again. Checking the road is the most important rule for any driver on an adventure.

Leo started to pedal his feet as fast as he could. The little red car moved forward with a happy clicking sound. He steered around a bright green garden hose and avoided a sleepy cat napping on the warm pavement.

Suddenly, Dad held up a red cardboard circle that said STOP in big white letters. Leo pushed his feet hard against the ground to bring the car to a halt. He waited patiently until Dad showed the green sign.

Leo practiced parallel parking between two cardboard boxes in the backyard. It was tricky to move backward without bumping into anything. He tried three times until the car was perfectly straight and centered in the small spot.

By the time the sun began to set, Leo was a master of the driveway. He knew how to signal with his hand and use his silver whistle as a horn. Dad gave him a big high-five for being responsible.

And so, Leo learned that driving was about much more than just going fast. He promised to keep practicing every single day until he was tall enough for the big blue car. Finally, the little driver went inside for dinner.
