In the sparkling Crystal Creek lived a small otter named Pip. Pip was a chocolate-brown otter with a creamy white belly who loved the water. However, he often felt very sad because he was the slowest swimmer in the river.

Every morning, Pip watched the silver fish zip past him like tiny arrows. He tried to kick his legs as hard as he could, but he only splashed around. 'How can I swim more faster?' he asked a passing dragonfly.

Suddenly, a large shadow moved slowly across the sandy river bottom. It was Captain Bubbles, the oldest and wisest turtle in the creek. He wore a red captain's hat and smiled kindly at the frustrated little otter through his wrinkles.

Captain Bubbles floated gently on his back and looked at Pip. 'To go faster, you must not fight the water,' the wise turtle explained. 'You must learn to glide through it like a smooth, slippery stone in the stream.'

First, the Captain taught Pip how to tuck his paws in tight against his chest. Pip pulled his chocolate-brown arms close and felt his body become very sleek. He looked just like a tiny submarine ready for a big underwater adventure.

Next, they practiced the big tail kick. Captain Bubbles showed Pip how to move his tail up and down in long, powerful strokes. Pip tried it and felt a sudden push that sent him gliding forward through the cool water.

Pip practiced his new moves for many hours until the sun began to set. He learned that blowing small bubbles helped him keep a steady rhythm. His whiskers twitched with joy as he felt himself moving quicker and quicker each time.

The next day, Pip decided to test his speed against the rushing current. He tucked his paws, kicked his tail, and zoomed past the mossy rocks. He was no longer splashing wildly; he was gliding like a fast, furry rocket.
